What is a proxy and what can I do with it?

A proxy server a device that’s usually a computer or router that forwards information it receives out through its network/internet connection and in most cases doing so the destination site will see their IP address and not yours. This can be helpful if your network is blocking certain sites or the website your trying to view is blocking your IP address or your counties IP address. Here’s some examples;
  • Your school or corporate network or country is blocking access to certain sites. If you setup your web browser to use a proxy you can usually bypass those restrictions and view the website content being blocked.
  • Bypass file download limits on file sharing sites like Mediafire, Rapidshare, Hotfile and any other website that limits the number of files you can download per IP Address.
  • A service your trying to use like Netflix, Hulu, CBS, ABC, Pandora, Last.FM, Turntable and others do not allow access to IP address’s outside of the United States. If your in another country on vacation and would like to access the sites your a member of you would normally be blocked since your IP address is outsite of the United States but if you use a proxy located in the United States with your web browser you would be able to view the sites just as if you where in the USA.
You can use proxy’s with Widows, MAC, Linux, Xbox, Roku and almost any internet device or web browser that supports Proxies.
